Lactobacillus Summary


  Non-sporeforming Gram-positive bacilli (see WebLinked image)

  Facultative or strict anaerobes

  Normal flora of oral digestive tract and genitourinary tract; Most common bacteria in urethra

  Rarely cause disease

  Cause caries (tooth cavities) of dentin secondary to enamel caries caused by mutans streptococci; important in smooth surface caries (see also Actinomyces)

  Resistant to vancomycin and other antibiotics are bacteriostatic but not bacteriocidal
