Research and Internships

In addition to curricular requirements, students must complete co-curricular requirements in order to receive a Scholars citation from Life Sciences. There are two main functions of the internships and research:

  • Educational/Academic: To supplement the curriculum requirements of the program and help students merge classroom learning with practical experience
  • Social Responsibility: To foster a connection among student members of the community and foster a feeling of responsibility to the environment and society.
Internship (2 credits):

Upon approval, in their second year, students are required to complete an internship that is related to the Life Sciences or their specific major. The goal is to provide students with practical experiences outside of the classroom. Internships take place either on or off campus and they reflect the career interests of students. Students complete a minimum of 96 hours at the internship site, and later present a poster presentation for the College Park Scholars Academic Showcase in May that highlights their experience.

  • Academic Showcase: College Park Scholars hosts this annual event during which students present posters highlighting internships, team and individual experiences, performances, and exhibits. All sophomore Life Sciences students are required to showcase their internship experience, and all first year students are required to interview and interact with the sophomore presenters.
