College Park Scholars Life Sciences Colloquium
In order to fulfill requirements for the program, students participate in a colloquium in both their first and second
years. First year colloquium (CPSP118L) is intentionally "hands-on" to give students support and guidance as they transition
into college and explore their interests. The second year colloquium is less "hands on" to give students autonomy to pursing
their interests.
CPSP118L: College Park Scholars Colloquium I, Life Sciences
During their first year, students are required to meet once a week for two hours during the fall and spring semesters.
First year colloquium (CPSP118L) has four main objectives. They include:
- Introducing students to key faculty from the College of Chemical and Life Sciences and scientists from outside
institutions
- Building student awareness of the many different academic paths they can pursue in the College of Chemical and
Life Sciences and introduce them to various scientific disciplines through guest speakers.
- Establishing connections between students and faculty that foster future internship opportunities for students. As
students are required to complete an internship in their sophomore year, it is helpful to introduce them to scientists
who have research opportunities
- Fostering community development among students and using the weekly meeting as a forum for discussion of community
events, activities, and other topics that will impact them.

CPSP218L: College Park Scholars Colloquium II, Life Sciences:
During their second year, students are required to choose a colloquium in which to participate. They have eight colloquium options taught by faculty
from the College of Chemical and Life Sciences. The format for this class is modeled after the University Honors Program Seminars, and it allowed for
small classes of 18-25 students, relationships between students and faculty, intimate conversations, and team projects. The main objectives of the second
year colloquium are to:
- Provide students the opportunity to actively participate in journal and internet research. They have colloquium topics from which to choose taught by
various faculty.
- Develop and give a formal presentation to a faculty member and peers and receive critiques on their performance
- Positively interact with peers to provide advice, guidance, and support
- Illustrate the importance of a team approach to problem solving.
Colloquium Topics Include:
- Religion and Science: Complementary, Compatible, or Irreconcilable
- Biology of Organisms Inhabiting Stressful or Unusual Environments
- Spice of Life: The Importance of Spices and plant species in Food Science Technology on Human Culture and History
- The Biology and Ecology of the Chesapeake Bay: With Emphasis on Ecology and Human Interactions with Invasive Plant and Animal Species in the Bay Eco System
- Leadership Seminar
