During the summer of 2002, eighteen students flew across sixteen time zones to participate in a travel-study program "Down Under." Under the instruction of Dr. Bill Higgins, they visited three distinct areas of Australia: Kakadu National Park (Northern Territory), the Daintree River/Cape Tribulation area (Queensland), and Lizard Island Marine Research Station (Great Barrier Reef). The trip provided a rich introduction to the flora and fauna of Australia-from kangaroos to angelfish to stinging trees-as well as the opportunity to explore its cultural history and nuances. The 2000 trip was the third offered by the College Park Scholars-Life Sciences Program.
