Travel Information for Deep Green Particpants

Symposium and Workshop

The Friday symposium will be open to the public, and will consist of five 30 minute talks (including time for questions), and a 30 minute break for coffee and discussion. This will be followed by a reception with a cash bar and light food. The Saturday workshop will consist of four sessions concentrating on computational advances, analytical methods, data presentation, and character evolution. There will be time for roughly 15 20-minute talks (roughly one per participating lab), which should be informal talks aimed at encouraging discussion. If you would like to give a talk at the Workshop, please indicate this and provide a title in your reply. The workshop will be followed by a Saturday dinner with anecdotes, reminiscences, and general jollity led by Brent Mishler.

For those of you who are interested, the workshop will also be overlapping somewhat with an open house at the University of Maryland Human Computer Interaction Laboratory: http://www.cs.umd.edu/projects/hcil/

We will have an overhead projector, carousel projector for 2x2 slides, and a video projector with S-video and RGB ports. Please contact me if you would like to request any other equipment.

Junior-level Participants

The Deep Green group is committed to encouraging significant participation by scientists early in their careers. Funds are available to support 15-20 junior level participants at the workshop. Each participant is encouraged to nominate one student or postdoc with interests in phylogenetic reconstruction and/or the early evolution of green plants.

Arrival

The University of Maryland - College Park is located on Baltimore Avenue (Rte. 1) in College Park, Maryland. The most convenient airport is BWI (Baltimore/Washington International), which is an easy 40 minute drive North of College Park. Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) is also convenient, although it is a somewhat more difficult drive; it is possible to ride metro from DCA to the College Park Metro station, but because the meeting will be held during a class break, the campus Metro Shuttle will not be running. Dulles International Airport (IAD) is not convenient to College Park; it should be used only as a last resort. We may be able to make a limited number of trips to BWI to pick up passengers; if you would be interested in this possibility, please contact Ken Karol (karol@umail.umd.edu).

Expenses

Our budget for this meeting is $500/person. Meals will be provided for Friday dinner (light fare), Saturday breakfast, lunch, and banquet. These and incidental costs are over $100 per person, which leaves about $400 for hotel and travel expenses. Please contact me (delwiche@umd5.umd.edu) if this will create a hardship. Expense reimbursement will be handled by the University of Tulsa. If you have questions about the reimbursement procedure, please contact Mark Buchheim (mark-buchheim@utulsa.edu).

Lodging

We have reserved a small block of rooms at the following hotels. The Inn and Conference Center is on the University of Maryland campus is in the same facility where the banquet will be held, but is somewhat more expensive. The Quality Inn is a short walk from campus. The University of Maryland campus is quite large, and transportation by van will be available for those who prefer not to walk. Please make your own reservations prior to the indicated deadline, and note that you will have to refer to the indicated group to receive the reduced rate.
