The Ecological Society of America's SEEDS Undergraduate Research
Fellowship application deadline has been extended to October 1. The
SEEDS program promotes ecology opportunities to students that are
underrepresented in the profession. Don't miss this unique opportunity
to customize your ecology research experience. The possibilities with
the SEEDS fellowship are unparalleled, with awardees having almost the
entire ESA membership, 10,000 strong, to choose from as mentors.
Fellowship students essentially conduct a mini thesis from writing a
proposal, to conducting their research and analyzing results, to
presenting at the ESA meeting. The fellowship stipend is $6,000, plus
all research expenses, plus travel to two ESA meetings and a leadership
meeting making the total award over $12,000. The SEEDS fellowship is
the highest honor in the SEEDS program, and fellows are encouraged as

Youth Wellness Department Interns
Support the efforts of the YMCA of Metropolitan PhD (Physical Healthy
and Driven) program. This program works with youth between the ages
of 5-13 to combat obesity. The PHD program increases the awareness of
living a healthy lifestyle through fun physical activities and
nutritional counseling. Interns would plan, implement and manage
youth wellness and fitness programs at multiple branches and program
centers. In addition, they will provide support with marketing and
community outreach related to this program.

Health and Wellness Interns
Assist the wellness staff with creating, implementing, and delivering

design and evaluating health fair promotions. There are many

NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program
NASA-USRP offers undergraduate students across the United States
internships at NASA centers under the supervision of technical mentors. This
prestigious program seeks rising sophomore, junior and senior
students in the disciplines of engineering, math, computer science and life/physical
sciences. Students may apply for 10-week summer session and 15-week
spring or fall session. NASA-USRP provides students with hands-on, real-life
research experiences that challenge, inspire and bring practical
application to complement the students’ academic education. Stipends are $6,000
for the summer session and $9,000 for fall and spring, plus a round-trip travel

Student Internship for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Analysis
The College Park Committee for a Better Environment (CBE) (http://www.ci.college-park.md.us/committee_for_a_better_environme.htm

graduate or exceptional undergraduate student to conduct a greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions inventory for the City of College Park. The
intern’s primary responsibilities include the following:
- Complete a baseline GHG inventory and forecast, using
specialized software.
- Identify possible actions and targets of opportunity for
reducing the city’s global warming footprint, with the help of the
software
- Work closely with CBE, City employees and representatives
from utilities to collect emissions data.
- Communicate all findings and issues, both verbally and in a
final written report, to assigned CBE contacts.
Requirements:
- Well-organized, detail-oriented, good investigative and
research skills
- Experience with issues surrounding energy use and utilities
- Basic computer and data-manipulation skills
- Assertive personality, persistence, and strong people skills
- Strong writing skills
- General understanding of the causes, science, and impacts of
global warming and climate change
- Prior experience working for and knowledge of local
government is preferable but not required
Time Commitment: 200 hours total. Weekly hours are flexible with a
minimum requirement of 10 hours per week.

TUTORS NEEDED AT PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY SCHOOLS
Prince George’s County Public Schools is looking for college students to
serve as tutors for the Advancement Via Individual Determination program
(AVID). AVID is in-school academic support for students in grades
4-12 that prepares students for college eligibility and success. AVID is also an
elective class intended to provide for the student’s academic and
personal success. The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration,
reading, note taking, study skills, and college/career/motivational activities.
Tutors are essential to the success of the class, where they facilitate
student assess to rigorous and serve as role models.

Seeking intern for fall or spring
College intern sought to work with researcher at the Smithsonian
Environmental Research Center for the fall of 2007 or spring 2008.
The project involves research into the biology and ecology of marine
parasites that infect microalgae (or phytoplankton) that form red
tides or harmful algal blooms. The student will be trained in
culturing the host and parasite, microscopy, cytological staining,
designing and conducting laboratory experiments, analysis and
interpretation of data and statistics. The work will be under the
supervision of Dr. Mario Sengco and Dr. Wayne Coats in the Protistan
Ecology Lab (http://www.serc.si.edu/labs/protistan_ecology/
index.jsp). This is a two to three month position with the
possibility of extension. This is an excellent opportunity to gain
practical laboratory training and experience in marine science
research. This work is ideal for students wishing to do a semester
internship. Basic laboratory experience and course-work in biology,
microbiology and chemistry would be desireable.

Senior undergraduates who have done chemical research (either at your
institution or elsewhere) are invited to apply for the Frank and Sara
McKnight Prize in Undergraduate Chemistry no later than October
15th, 2007.
Finalists will be invited to present their posters at the UT
Southwestern Biochemistry Research Retreat to be held in New Braunfels, Texas,
November 9-11th, 2007.
Winners will be chosen based on the significance of their work and
excellence of presentation. Travel and accommodations at the retreat
for finalists will be provided by UT Southwestern.
The Prize includes
- $2000 for the 1st place winner
- $1000 for 2nd place
- $500 for 3rd place
The application is intended to be quite simple:
- An abstract describing the applicant's research (there is no formal
length requirement, but typically 250 750 words should cover the
matter);
- A letter from the research mentor in support of the applicant
(again, 1 2 pages should be sufficient, but there is no length requirement or
limit);
- Self reported GPA and GRE scores (if available). We believe that
we can rely on competitive applicants to report this information
accurately. If students receive test scores after the October 15th deadline, they
may send in that information as well.
Any senior undergraduates who feel that their research should be
considered for this prize are encouraged to submit an application, even if they
feel that some detail or another might not meet the guidelines listed on the
attached flyer. All applications will be carefully reviewed.

The course is titled, "The Hawaiian Humpback Whale: Field Research,

Aquaculture Job
Are you interested in working in a tropical fish facility? If so,
you will be working in approximately 80-degree weather, which would be nice in the
wintertime. Our cichlid fish facility contains Tilapia and East African Cichlids from Lake Malawi for
genetic studies in aquaculture and evolutionary biology. The job involves feeding, cleaning tanks,
assessment of fish health, and monitoring of a state-of-the-art recirculating filtration system.
Entry-level position, with possibility of advancement into laboratory research. This position is
available through the federal work-study program, but we are also accepting applicants who
are not eligible for work study.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Job Description: Students will be participating in coding
videotapes, data management, literature searches, and other research related tasks.
Study Description: An examination of social development in monkeys to
develop and provide support for assessment of non-human primate
models of developmental psychopathology. This study employs neuroimaging,
genetic, and psychophysiological techniques to investigate social, emotional, and
cognitive development in monkeys.
Time Requirements: 6-12 hours/week (2-3 credits)
Requirements:
- Minimum GPA 3.0
- Second-semester freshmen, sophomores and juniors
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Interest in research as well as biopsychology, neuroscience, or
primatology
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft-based programs

BSCI 289. This course provides pass/fail elective credit. Part 1 of
the BSCI289 Contract must be filled out by the student and his/her internship
supervisor and submitted prior to the end of the schedule adjustment
period (September 12, 2007). Part 2 is due at the end of the semester. Both
