Looking for two undergraduate assistants
Our research group (David Hammer & Janet Coffey)
in the Science Ed Center of Curriculum
and Instruction is looking for an undergraduate to
help us out with transcribing videotapes from high
school biology and environmental science classes.
This is part of an NSF-funded project to look at how
teachers notice and respond to students' ideas and
reasoning. The position is an hourly job with pay
in the $10/hour for 5-10 flexible hours (with
some weekly deadline constraints). It is possible to work over winter
break.
The tasks require attention to detail and good organization
skills, as well as facility with computers. Science majors are
preferred.

UNCF-Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards
The United Negro College Fund, Inc. and The Merck Institute For Science
Education Research Laboratories have established scholarship awards for
outstanding African American students pursuing studies and careers in
the field of biomedical research.
At least 15 awards will be given annually at the undergraduate level.
Each award consists of a scholarship (up to $25,000) and two summer
internship stipends (totaling a minimum of $10,000). Application deadline is

Summer research program at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
The University of Maryland has been asked to select one student to
participate in the summer 2008 EXROP (EXceptional Research OPortunities)
Program, sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The goal
of this program is to expand the pool of talented students who enter graduate
studies with the goal of becoming academic scientists. It is open to
undergraduate students (usually sophomores and juniors, but freshmen and
seniors will also be considered) from a disadvantaged background or from
groups typically underrepresented in the sciences. In addition to
having a research experience in a top biomedical research lab, EXROP
participants are eligible to apply for Gilliam Graduate Fellowship, which provide 5
years of funding leading to a PhD in the biological sciences.

Undergraduate needed to care for animals in lab
The laboratory of Dr. Arthur Popper (Dept. of Biology) is looking for
an undergraduate to help care for the fish in the research lab. We
are looking for someone who, preferably, could start immediately and
work through winter term and through the spring 2008 semester.
Experience maintaining fish, and preferably in very large tanks and
with fairly large numbers of animals, is a necessity. The position
involves working with a number of people in Dr. Popper's laboratory,
and there is a possiblity that the person selected could help out in
a research project as well, but this would depend on the individual
and their interests.

A family in Elkridge, MD is in need of a caregiver for their 8 year
old son who has multiple disabilities. The duties include engaging
him in activities to strengthen his fine and gross motor skills,
walking with him, performing light physical therapy, planning out and

about a special program with the Department of Defense. This program

Chester Summer Scholar Program
The Division of Neonatology at MetroHealth Medical Center is now
accepting applications for the 2008 Chester Summer Scholars Program.
This unique and exciting summer experience accepts up to 15 medical
science students interested in exploring academic medicine and
research. The program runs from June 2, 2008 to August 7, 2008.
Requirements:
- the student must have completed the second year of undergraduate
studies in premedical or scientific studies
- the student must be a resident of Ohio or attend an Ohio college or
university
Stipend:
Each recipient will receive a stipend award of $2000. Supplies and
equipment are provided by MetroHealth Medical Center. Parking is
provided. Assistance in finding housing is available at Case Western
Reserve University and must be paid for by the student.

- a typed Chester Summer Scholars Program application and an
additional copy
- a copy of official school transcripts
- three letters of recommendation from individuals with academic or

Field Experience and Research Opportunities for Students at
the University of Maryland - College Park.
The conservation group Operation Wallacea is currently looking for
university students to assist in biodiversity assessment and
conservation management projects in Indonesia, Honduras, Peru, South
Africa, Mozambique and Egypt. Operation Wallacea employ university
academics from the US, UK and Canada to conduct research on the
population dynamics and behavioral ecology of a range of herpetofauna,
bird, bat, primate, mammal, fish, and invertebrate species in remote
forest and marine habitats in the tropics. The information produced
from this research is then used to form a conservation management
strategy for the area to obtain money from large funding organizations
such as the World Bank and GEF to set up sustainable conservation
management projects. These projects provide local communities with the
education, training, and alternative sources of income they need to
work themselves out of poverty and conserve their environment.
University students who join these projects therefore have a unique
opportunity to participate in real scientific research projects and
work alongside an experienced team of academics. During the
expedition, students learn a range of skills relating to biodiversity
monitoring techniques, conservation management, bush/jungle survival
and PADI dive training. It is also possible for students to collect
data for a senior or masters level thesis under the supervision or our
academic team.

at 3:30pm on Thursday, November 15th in 1117 Plant Sciences at the
University of Maryland - College Park.

Operation Wallacea, a conservation group, is seeking college students

DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program

Summer Internship Program that will support students during summer 2008.
This program provides 10-week summer internships at federal research
facilities for undergraduate students majoring in homeland security

The St. Leger lab has an opening for a lab tech. A 10-15 hour a week
commitment is required. Job responsibilities will include (but are not
limited to) preparing selective media, isolating colonies, working
with a
florescent microscope, and collecting field samples.
All training will be provided, so no experience is necessary. We are
looking for a student with good problem solving skills and can work
independently. Hours are flexible. Pay is $7.50 an hour. This position
includes a commitment to work summer and winter hours.

Student Conservation Association Conservation Internships
The SCA gave nearly 2000 students and young adults the opportunity to
participate in conservation internships in all 50 states across 50
disciplines. In its 50th year, the SCA is running a series of events

University of California San Francisco Graduate Program
UCSF offers the Integrative Program in Quanititative Biology (iPQB)
focused on applying physical, mathematical and systems approaches to
biological programs as well as Graduate Training in Bioinformatics.
iPQB seeks to train students to be literate in the languages of
biology, physics and mathematics in preparation of studying cellular
structure and function in detail. The rich and collaborative
environment features over fifty faculty members from six departments
to watch over approximately 80 students enrolled.
The graduate program in Bioinformatics is a track within the iPQB,
leading to a PhD in Biological and Medical Informatics. This group
comprises of more than 20 faculty members watching over approximately
30 students.

Spring Internship Opportunities at the Woodrow Wilson Center
The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is looking for
qualified students (advanced undergraduate or graduate) interested in
being part-time (15 hours/week) research assistants to visiting
