5/16/08 Part-time student position

The MathBench curriculum project team is looking for a student who could work a minimum of 4 hours a week (and up to 10) on a regular schedule over the summer. The project is developing web resources to infuse more mathematical rigor into biology courses. The work would mainly include html (website) coding, internet searches, entry of information into databases, cataloging images, and printing off a website. The student should be computer-literate, and some experience with HTML is strongly preferred. Experience with Dreamweaver, Photoshop, javascript, css and/or databases would be helpful but not required. The position would require some time spent on campus each week, but some of work could be done at home if the students has access to the appropriate software. The pay rate is $8.00/hour. 5/12/08 Research Assistant

Children's National Medical Center (CNMC EOE, M/F/D/V.), the largest non-profit medical and research facility in the mid-Atlantic region dedicated exclusively to the care of infants, children, adolescents and young adults, is currently seeking a Research Assistant to support our Children's Research Institute (CRI) - Genetics Center. Individual selected will study inborn errors of metabolism. The work will include biochemical assays, and management of a murine model of the disorder.

The ideal candidate will have a MS/BS/BA in the biological sciences, and demonstrated experience with RNA, DNA manipulation, biochemical assays, and animal husbandry. A previous research background would be advantageous.

We are looking for a recent graduate to teach one laboratory section of BSCI 223, General Microbiology, for the Summer II session. The lab section meets once a day for a maximum of two hours. Applicants need to have taken the course as a student and received a grade of B or higher. Preference will be given to students who have taken the course at UMCP. This would be a great opportunity to earn extra money for the summer while gaining leadership and science education experience. A research assistant position (1 year contract, 40 hrs/wk) is open in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Stein, in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. The successful applicant must have demonstrated skills in molecular biology, immunology and tissue culture. Prior knowledge of protein purification and analysis techniques is highly desired. This individual must also be highly organized and able to work independently. Successful candidate must be willing to work on an occasional weekend. 5/1/08 Summer research opportunities in cardiovascular health

Applications are now being accepted for the new UM-STAR program. The goal of UM-STAR is to provide research experiences for individuals from groups underrepresented in the bio-medical and behavioral sciences (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians). We are also interested in those who intend to focus on the elimination of health disparities and/or increased participation of individuals from groups underrepresented in bio-medical and behavioral health research disciplines. Currently, UM-STAR is accepting applications from college sophomores with a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 and who are interested in biomedical or behavioral science relevant to public health and cardiovascular disease. Applicants should have an interest in pursuing a PhD in biomedical or behavioral health sciences and be willing to commit to the program for 2 consecutive summers. In addition, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are currently enrolled full-time in a 4-year college or university.

During the 10-week program on the College Park campus, participants will take part in faculty-mentored research and other research and career-development activities.

MedImmune has a new opportunity for a Research Associate I/II in the Physicochemical testing Group within the Analytical Biochemistry Department. The successful candidate will utilize chromatographic (HPLC and GC) and spectroscopic methods to support biopharmaceutical products, such as humanized monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, and vaccines.

The candidate will make detailed experimental observations, review and analyze data, and interpret experimental results. The candidate will need to present and discuss experimental results at group/project team meetings and scientific conferences. Finally, he/she must be able to work in a team structure and interface with different research and development departments.

Job Requirements:
This position requires a BS or MS degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field with 0 to 5 years of relevant experience with a BS degree or 1 to 3 years with a MS, preferably working in a bioanalytical environment in an industrial setting. Familiarity with size exclusion, affinity, reversed phase, ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatographic methods is necessary. Supervisory and project management experience is a plus. Strong interpersonal skills, outstanding verbal and written communication skills are essential.
