Unique Opportunity for Ten Undergraduates
2009 Ecological Genetics Field Study Abroad in China
With funding from NSF's Partnerships for International Research and
Education (PIRE) program, we
are offering 10 undergraduates (U.S. citizens or permanent residents
only) the opportunity to
participate in a unique study abroad opportunity in China during the
summer of 2009 (mid-May
through mid-July).
The research focus of our PIRE grant is a forensic biogeographic
study of species that are native to
China and invasive in the southeastern U.S. as well as a growing
number of species native to the
southeastern U.S. and invasive in China. Each summer, we will run an
8 week field course where
we will visit biological communities throughout China. After the
field course, students can elect to
continue in short-term research internships in our partner labs in
China.
Students will need to be prepared to take full advantage of this
experience. Each spring semester,
students will enroll at the University of Georgia (UGA) and take 3
courses; two in intensive
elementary Mandarin Chinese and a laboratory course in genetics. No
prior experience with
Chinese language is required, although students should have had at
least a course in introductory
biology and preferably courses in ecology and evolutionary biology.
The cost to the student of the summer program is minimal: the grant
covers travel to and within
China, lodging and most meals. The student is responsible for
insurance, visa costs and personal
expenses. Students are also responsible for the costs of enrolling at
the University of Georgia for
all required courses (all students are charged at the in-state
tuition rate of ~$200 per credit
hour).
Applications for the 2009 program are available on our website:
http://www.genetics.uga.edu/pire. The deadline for application is
fast approaching, although we
can extend it if a highly motivated student contacts us showing
interest and needing some
additional time to get together the application materials. We
encourage any interested students to
contact us for more information. Or, see the web site:
http://www.genetics.uga.edu/pire/undergrad.html or e-mail us at

Fellowship Opportunities for University of Maryland Students & Recent
Alumni
The Villers Fellowship
The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice was created in 2005 by
Philippe Villers, Founder and President of Families USA. Villers
Fellows work in our health policy department and assist our
organization's efforts to improve access to health coverage for all
Americans, especially for low-income and other vulnerable
communities. Specifically, Villers Fellows will conduct research on a
range of health care policy issues, and write and contribute to
publications that are relevant to current health policy debates.
In creating the fellowship, Mr. Villers aspired to develop a network
of young leaders who share a passion for health care justice. The
ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to health care justice
work following their year as a fellow. Additionally, in order to
encourage the development of future leaders, Villers Fellows must
commit to mentoring at least one person over the course of their
careers.
The application deadline for the Villers Fellowship is January 15, 2009.
You can find more information, including a downloadable application
form, on our Web site:
http://www.familiesusa.org/about/the-villers-fellowship.html

Care Justice or would like to request hard copies of the application
brochure, please contact me at villersfellowship@familiesusa.org.
The Wellstone Fellowship
The Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice aims to advance social
justice through health care advocacy by focusing particularly on the
unique challenges facing communities of color. Through this
fellowship, established to honor the memory of the late Senator Paul
D. Wellstone, we hope to expand the pool of talented social justice
advocates from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate an interest in health care
policy and racial/ethnic health disparities. Additionally, we are
looking for an individual who displays the potential to contribute to
social justice work after their year of hands-on experience as a
fellow. You can find more information, including a downloadable

National Geographic is seeking three capable interns.
Please see the following descriptions for details on the three
internships: 1) Remote Imaging Internship 2) Production Internship
and 3) Wildcam Internship.
1. National Geographic Remote Imaging Internship 2008/2009
National Geographic Remote Imaging department is looking for
Remote Imaging interns for fall 2008 and spring 2009. This is a non-
paid Internship, to which the applicant must be able to dedicate at
least 15 hours per week, and for which the applicant must receive at
least 1 class credit.
Background
Remote Imagings mission is to develop and deploy unique imaging
technology to support biological research. Our main tool is called
Crittercam. It is a microprocessor-controlled imaging and data-
collecting tool that is worn by wild animals to learn more about
their biology and habitat in situations where human observation isn
t feasible.
Our secondary mission is to develop methods to disseminate
information about biology and conservation to the public. The main
way we do that is by producing television shows about our research
collaborations, but we also communicate through our website, public
presentations, and other outreach opportunities as they arise.
Description of Position
The Remote Imaging Intern conducts a variety of tasks and projects to
support the missions of Remote Imaging. Historically, the
particulars of these tasks have changed from year to year, as we
tailor the internship to the individual objectives and skills of the
intern. As such, we encourage persons from a wide range of
backgrounds and majors to apply. Examples of relevant majors include
Biology, Environmental Science, Film & Digital Media, Communication,
and English.
Things are always in high gear in our department, so eligible interns
must be reliable, self-motivated, able to think independently, apt at
multi-tasking, and dedicated to producing thorough and high-quality
work.
Depending on the interns particular capabilities, the intern may
be asked to do anything from looking for electronics for our
engineers to researching biological information to support our
Crittercam projects. Past intern duties have included:
Conducting web and/or library research
Helping to create and design educational/outreach materials
Writing grant proposals
Creating species reports outlining the ecological considerations of a
particular species
Assisting in coming up with story ideas
Aiding in tape logging and dubbing

Our secondary mission is to develop methods to disseminate
information about biology and conservation to the public. These
outreach efforts primarily include producing television shows and
films about our research collaborations, and communicating through
our website, public presentations, educational products, and other
outreach opportunities as they arise.
Description of Position
These outreach efforts offer a number of opportunities to interns
interested in film and media production. The intern would have the
opportunity to work on a variety of video projects ranging from
