9/24/08 Unique Opportunity for Ten Undergraduates
2009 Ecological Genetics Field Study Abroad in China

With funding from NSF's Partnerships for International Research and   Education (PIRE) program, we are offering 10 undergraduates (U.S. citizens or permanent residents   only) the opportunity to participate in a unique study abroad opportunity in China during the   summer of 2009 (mid-May through mid-July).

The research focus of our PIRE grant is a forensic biogeographic   study of species that are native to China and invasive in the southeastern U.S. as well as a growing   number of species native to the southeastern U.S. and invasive in China. Each summer, we will run an   8 week field course where we will visit biological communities throughout China. After the   field course, students can elect to continue in short-term research internships in our partner labs in   China.

Students will need to be prepared to take full advantage of this   experience. Each spring semester, students will enroll at the University of Georgia (UGA) and take 3   courses; two in intensive elementary Mandarin Chinese and a laboratory course in genetics. No   prior experience with Chinese language is required, although students should have had at   least a course in introductory biology and preferably courses in ecology and evolutionary biology.

The cost to the student of the summer program is minimal:  the grant   covers travel to and within China, lodging and most meals. The student is responsible for   insurance, visa costs and personal expenses. Students are also responsible for the costs of enrolling at   the University of Georgia for all required courses (all students are charged at the in-state   tuition rate of ~$200 per credit hour).

Applications for the 2009 program are available on our website: http://www.genetics.uga.edu/pire. The deadline for application is   fast approaching, although we can extend it if a highly motivated student contacts us showing   interest and needing some additional time to get together the application materials. We   encourage any interested students to contact us for more information. Or, see the web site: http://www.genetics.uga.edu/pire/undergrad.html or e-mail us at   "pire@uga.edu"

Project Title: Development of Structure-Searchable Toxicology Databases Derived From FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research In-House Toxicity and Clinical Data
Mentor: Dr. R. Daniel Benz
Building: Federal Research Center, WO51
Location: Silver Spring, MD
Email: R.Daniel.Benz@fda.hhs.gov

Project Description: The Informatics and Computational Safety Analysis Staff (ICSAS) within the Science and Research Staff of the CDER Office of Pharmaceutical Science develops, validates and uses computer models to predict the toxicological and adverse human clinical effects of drugs and other chemical substances. The goal of our project is to further expand our toxicity and clinical databases for use within FDA and to supply industry and the public with non-confidential chemical and toxicology data extracted from FDA/CDER files. The intern will assist the project leader in identifying and adding new toxicity and clinical data to the current structure-searchable databases. As part of the data entry process, the intern will use/learn additional aspects of biology and chemistry as they relate to the interpretation of a variety of in vivo and in vitro toxicity studies. The intern will also use their scientific knowledge to identify and verify complex chemical names, other identifiers, and chemical structures associated with the toxicity and clinical data they enter into the database. The intern will gain experience in working with ISIS/Draw, Leadscope Enterprise Chemoinformatics software, and other software used in chemoinformatics.

The intern should be, at minimum, a junior with a background in biology, cell biology, or similar discipline. The intern should also have completed general and organic chemistry. The project is flexible, but the intern should plan on dedicating at least 2 four-hour blocks of time to data entry every week during the school year. This time frame will allow the intern sufficient time to select a toxicity study in our files, collect the information, and finish entering the data from an individual study into the database before their work week is complete. Estimated length of time needed to complete project working part-time during the school year and full- time during summers and extended school vacations: One year. Project estimated target start and end dates: July 2008 - June 2009.
