The panel felt that the sable antelope was a very interesting species and that the questions were important. The facility at Front Royal offers a terrific place to study this species. However, several conceptual , methodological, and logical problems need to be addressed before this proposal can be funded. There were questions raised about the degree of synchrony in the captive (and wild) herds, especially given the data indicating the highly variable cycle length in individual cycles. Despite apparently variable degree of synchrony. In the proposed studies there is also a potential confounding factor of the dominance status of the female that is desynchronized. It was also suggested that there might be some interesting things happening when the herd is split, but there were no plans to investigate this. There were also some difficulties with the logic and design of the experiments on the role of flehmen behavior, as noted in one of the individual reviews. The budget was seen as much too high.
