Research Program:

Dr. Stein's research focuses on the mechanisms by which the human pathogen, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is able to synthesize and regulate the expression of one of its major outer membrane antigens, lipooligosaccharide (LOS). Students use molecular, immunological and biochemical techniques to further our understanding of the role of LOS in gonococcal disease. Information gleaned from these studies is directly applicable to understanding pathogenic mechanisms.
