Research interests: Physiological, biochemical and molecular changes associated with plant senescence in general and fruit crops in particular; interactions between O2 and C2H4 during fruit ripening.
The broad objective of the work is the investigation of plant senescence in detached plant organs at the biochemical and molecular levels and the factors which may alter the rate of senescence. C2H4 is a plant growth regulator which induces a number of biological responses, including senescence. An investigation of the mode of action of ethylene on the induction and development of senescence is the focus of the research. Low O2 delays the onset and rate of senescence in a number of plant tissues. This aspect of low O2 is used as a tool for identifying molecular events which are associated with the induction and action of C2H4.
