| Research: Expression and function of mammary glycoproteins. |
Dr. Mather's group is currently determining the function of butyrophilin, a major protein of the apical surface of mammary epithelial cells by targeting a disruption to the endogenous gene in mice by homologous recombination. They are also interested in characterizing the sequences associated with the butyrophilin gene which direct mammary-specific gene expression. Such sequences may be used to direct the expression of human genes in transgenic dairy animals for commercial purposes.
