Admission to the BEES Program is competitive and requires commitment by one or more graduate faculty to serve as an advisor. A list of faculty members who are accepting students can be found here. Early in the application process, students are encouraged to contact faculty members who share their research interests.

Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university and should have completed at least one year of coursework in each of the following subjects: calculus, physics, general chemistry, organic chemistry and biology. Students lacking this coursework may be required to remedy deficiencies after matriculation into the program. The Graduate School requires a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 in all coursework.

Application materials:

1. University of Maryland online application for graduate studies (An application checklist is included at that site.)

2. BEES Application Supplemental Form. You will have access to this form after the general Graduate School application is submitted online and you receive an email with log in information.

3. Statement of goals, research interests, and experiences (submitted with your online application).

4. Three letters of recommendation from persons competent to judge your abilities and aptitude for graduate work (submitted electronically through the BEES application).

5. Transcripts of all previous college work (submitted to the University's Graduate Admissions office in ONE envelope).

6. Scores of the Graduate Record Examination General Aptitude Test. (Use University of Maryland institutional code 5814 and Biology departmental code 0203.)

7. Scores of the Graduate Record Examination for the Advanced Biology Test. (Use University of Maryland institutional code 5814 and Biology departmental code 0203.)

International applicants must also submit
-Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Spoken English (TSE) scores. (Use University of Maryland institutional code 5814 and Biology departmental code 35.)
-Certification of Finances form.

For best consideration for Fall 2008 matriculation, applications should be received by December 1, 2007, and must be received no later than December 10, 2007. Note that new students are not accepted in the spring semester.

To facilitate handling of applicant materials, please be sure the same name (spelled correctly) is used on all submitted materials.

Students currently enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Maryland can apply to transfer into the BEES program by having application materials forwarded to the BEES program office.
