SNP Applications
1. In Gibson and Muse read pp. 241-271
2. Read the following two papers:
Brumfield, R. T., P. Beerli, D. A. Nickerson, and S. V. Edwards. 2003. The Utility
of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in Inferences of Population History. TREE. Proof
(not yet published) [PDF]
Akey, J.M., G. Zhang, L. Jin, M. D. Shriver. 2002. Interrogating a High-Density SNP
Map for Signatures of Natural Selection. Genome Research. Vol: 12 (12) pp. 1805-1814
[PDF]
3. Consider the following:
a. Think about a about a situation where SNPs would be useful for your research or,
conversely, think about research that could be done with SNPs.
b. Under what circumstances would you decide to use a number of non-linked SNPs instead
of a SNPs haplotype (ie. a sequence with variation at >1 nucleotide)?
In class we will discuss the chapter first and discuss the papers second.
