Brucella spp.:

Brucella abortus (cattle)

Brucella melintensis (goats, sheep)

Brucella suis (swine)

Brucella canis (dogs)
  

  Extremely small, gram-negative coccobacilli

  Facultative intracellular pathogen surviving in macrophages of reticuloendothelial system

  Transmission via:

    1. Ingestion of contaminated milk or cheese
    2. Direct contact with infected animals or animal products
