REQUIRED TEXT: HUMAN REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY 2nd edition,
Jones, 1997, Academic Press: New York, plus handouts.
PREREQUISITE: A basic
knowledge of biology is expected, i.e. and introductory level life sciences course or equivalent experience.
OBJECTIVES: You are
expected to develop a comprehensive understanding of reproductive biology with emphasis being placed on mammalian,
and in particular human, reproduction.
GRADES and EXAM: Your
grade in this class is based upon your performance on exams and quizzes.
Quizzes-There will
be five or six quizzes, either announced or unannounced. A quiz will cover recent lectures, handouts, the book,
and any other material presented in class. Each quiz will be worth 10 pts. Your score will be based upon your 4
best quizzes for a total of 40 pts.
Exams-There will be
three exams, 2 mid-terms and a final. Each mid-term is worth 100 points and will cover the material between exams.
The final is cumulative and worth 150 pts. For a total of 350 pts. Exams
will consist of multiple choice or a combination of multiple, short answer, and essay questions. (See attached
schedule for time and date of exams. NOTE that while the exams will
occur on the scheduled dates, at the beginning of the class period, the material to be cover on the exams depends
on the progress of the lectures, so if you miss a class make sure you know where we are. It is your responsibility
not mine.) Grades
will be assigned on a straight scale
90-100% = A; 80-89.5 %= B; 70-79.5 % = C; 60-69.5 %= D; 59.5 % or less= F
Make-up Exams
Each case of missing an exam will be dealt with according to individual circumstances. In order to even be eligible for a make-up exam you must provide a legitimate excuse, i.e. note from physician, including his/her phone number, or have experienced a genuine emergency that I can verify (a note from mom wont do it or if your car breaks down I strongly suggested you call a tow truck and get a receipt). If possible notify me before the exam that you will be missing it. Those missing an exam without prior permission or a valid excuse will receive a ZERO. Also make-up exams will be harder, so dont miss the original.
