Commencement SpeakerDr. Geerat J. Vermeij

Dr. Geerat J. Vermeij, Professor of Geology at the University of California at Davis, is a pioneer in the field of evolutionary biology and paleontology.

He is interested in the “history of life on Earth from an economic point of view.” Dr. Vermeij studies marine mollusks, both as fossils and as living creatures, and is known for his research on the role animals play in shaping each other's evolutionary fates.

Dr. Vermeij was blind from the age of six and is recognized for his accomplishments as a world class marine biologist, and for his influence on young blind scientists through the National Federation of the Blind.

He was on the faculty of the University of Maryland Department of Zoology (now Biology) from 1971-1989.

Commencement Ceremony

Date: Friday May 23, 2008
Time: Noon, with reception from 9:30-11:00AM
Place: Cole Student Activities Building
Parking: Union Lane Parking Garage

Reception: Please join us for a graduation reception with Dean Norma Allewell in the Colonnade Hall of the Bioscience Research Building from 9:30- 11AM. This is open to all graduates and their family members. Refreshments will be served.

Ceremony details:

  • No tickets required.
  • Processional starts at 11:40 AM.
  • Guests should arrive by 11:20 a.m.
  • Candidates should report to the tunnel (rear of Cole) by 11:15 a.m. for line-up directions.
  • Students receiving honors, tassels or special medals should contact the department offering the specific award. Students receiving Latin honors will receive their tassel the day of graduation.
