Saccule of a Salmon
This light
micrograph shows the saccular and lagenar otolithic endorgans
of the ear of a Pacific salmon. Anterior is to the right and dorsal
to the top. The saccular chamber (S) and the lagenar chamber (L)
are contiguous with one another. The anterior part of the eighth
nerve, which innervates the saccule, is VIIIa. The utricle is
seen as 'U'. Each of the otolithic endorgans contains a calcareous
otolith (the saccular otolith is very apparent in the picture).
The otolith closely contacts the sensory epithelium which can,
in this picture, be seen outlined by the saccular branch of the
eighth nerve. Picture taken by Dr. Jiakun Song.
