A total of 39 credits are required for graduation. Tuition for 2005-06 is $393 per credit hour for in-state students and $820 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Mandatory fees are $458.50 per semester if you're taking 9 or more credits. .

Teaching assistants receive tuition remission for 10 credits per semester, and graduate
school fellows receive 12 credits per semester.

We have been fortunate to be able to offer partial or full ffinancial support to almost all of our students who request it. A few students each year receive graduate school fellowship support (for their first year only); to be competitive you have to have a GPA of 3.8 or better and excellent GRE scores. Other students are employed as teaching assistants, primarily in undergraduate biology courses, or sometimes as graduate assistants for various programs on campus (e.g., advising undergraduates, or working in a campus office). TA and GA positions provide a 9-month stipend and 10 credits of tuition remission, in exchange for about 20 hours/week of work. The majority of students receive additional financial support associated with their internships.

You may also be able to find outside scholarships. For example, the $10,000 Budweiser Conservation Scholarship Program or one from the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland.

Funding for international students is more problematic, as they are often not qualified (for lack of facility in English) for TA positions, and their GPA or GRE scores may not be competitive for university fellowship support. Most of our international students have come with outside fellowship support, through agencies such as LASPAU, Fulbright, or the Organization of American States, or support from their governments. Indian students could investigate the possibility of Hubert H. Humphreys fellowships. Latin American students could investigate the Fulbright-OAS Funding Initiative. This WWF web site has suggestions for students from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Another possibility is the World Bank: http://www.worldbank.org/wbi/scholarships/application04_pdf_format/english04.pdf

or the Ford Foundation:

Another possibility for international students is the International Foundation for Science.
